How I'm Working Out At Home During Self Isolation

Workout Gear is all Nike - Sports Bra & Leggings

If you’ve been following me on Instagram or know me personally, then you might know that working out and going to the gym has become a staple in my everyday routine. I usually spend 2 hours of 5-6 days a week at the gym and I love it. It keeps me going, it keeps me fit, it’s my time to free my overthinking mind honestly. It’s a bit of a sanctuary for me really and so when self-isolation and social distancing began, I stayed away from the gym and then the gym closed too and I said to myself, “I’m going to have to find a solution to this.”

At first, I was making a fuss in my mind about not having enough or necessary equipment, that the weights I have at home are far too light, but then I told myself to shut up and get on with it because these were stupid excuses. Staying active at this time is so important because I know I can get lazy and just sit around watching Netflix if I let myself. Therefore I started planning workouts in my head or searching them up on YouTube and I can’t tell you how many good things I have found so far on there.

There are so many incredible creators on Youtube, fitness or not, it’s insane. You can literally find a workout for anything, just type in what you want and you’ll definitely find it. I’ve been using MadFit and she is intense, like damn, but you’ll feel so good afterwards! I’ve also started beginners yoga from Adriene Louise & Sarah Beth and it’s so relaxing. I’ve kept up with these two so far as well as created my own workouts to go along with them.

The important thing is definitely to listen to your body day in and day out and see what it needs or what it can handle doing. Don’t overdo it; if you don’t feel like working out everyday, don’t punish yourself. Take a day off if you need to or just do a good stretching session. I would definitely suggest the later in that instance when you’re feeling lazy; take 10-15 minutes out of your day to just stretch all your muscles out, give them time to breathe and loosen otherwise you will feel really stiff after staying in all day, at least that’s how it is for me. If you’re following YouTube or Instagram Live workouts, take them at your pace – we can’t always keep up with the professionals and that’s okay too. Remember, you’re still putting in the work!

I’ll do supersets for different areas of my body; I always do legs because that is my strongest point and I enjoy it. I’ll work on my arms and shoulders one day and my chest and back the next. Making sure that each area of my body gets a little work at least every other day is important to keep the blood flowing and my fitness level up. When you can’t go for a walk or run, you have to improvise!

What I'm Using For Workouts

I’ve seen a lot of fitness influencers and influencers/celebs in general are starting to do Instagram Lives everyday for us as an audience to join in on their fitness sessions. Dance queen and fashion, beauty and fitness influencer, Danielle Peazer is doing classes everyday for different target areas on her Instagram through her “DPMethod” fitness platform. I saw Caroline Daur posted her own workout routine on Instagram yesterday as well and I loved that! I’ve also seen former Bachelorette, Hannah Brown and one of her runner up loves, Tyler Cameron, have formed a gang with their friends called “The Quarantine Crew” and are doing live workouts everyday with a trainer (also check out their TikTok because it's brilliant).

Someone is even offering PE lessons on IG Live for kids so they don’t miss out on exercise either. I think my favourite workout video I’ve seen online is the apartment complex in Spain that all worked out together from their balconies with a trainer on a rooftop – it was such a brilliant sight to see! It’s amazing to see people come together from different parts of the world through social media to bring positivity and unity.

It’s an uncertain time we’re living and we don’t know what’s going to happen from one day to the next. I heard last night that quarantine curfew is going to continue here in Sri Lanka for at least another 3 weeks. Yesterday curfew broke at 6am and we literally left home on the dot to get bits and bobs. No joke, the minute we got to the shops the queues were roads long and I’ve never seen anything like it.

But I have to commend all the people who stood in spaced lines for hours on end to get their groceries, even right up until curfew was re-imposed at 2pm (luckily it got changed from 12pm to 2pm, otherwise people would not have been able to get supplies). It was surreal really and to think that this now is going to be life for the next few weeks. So we have to keep our spirits up in any way that we can and I think that taking the time to get exercise in your day is a truly great way of doing that.

I’d love to know how you are keeping yourself fit, healthy, active and positive? What have you found that works best for you? Let me know in the comments below! And again, let’s keep in contact – if you need an extra friend, I’m here for you so drop me a DM on Instagram.

Sending you lots of love and hoping you’re staying safe and at home!
